The cowbell is a hand percussion instrument and is used in a range of music styles especially music genres such as salsa. the name "cowbell" originates from the bells usually worn around cattle so that herdsmen were able to determine their whereabouts without too much trouble. Although this type of bell was used on various farm animals it was certainly most popularly used on cows hence the name!
In some areas the cowbell is better known as an Alpine bell or even Almglocken (their German name) Richard Strauss is just one of the many composers who included the Almglocken among their musical ensemble.
